Every PTA has meetings, but not all of them do it like we do! In addition, we host a variety of events throughout the year. Here’s a brief detail of some examples you can expect:
Educational Meetings
Of course our member meetings can cover the typical business such as budget updates or voting on issues, but we usually keep that brief. For other portions of our meetings we have invited speakers to talk on topics of interest to families (our district’s special services department structure, books with characters who have disabilities, and handling big emotions are all topics that we have covered in the past). Or sometimes the “educational” focus is for the students rather than the grown-ups, such as at our SEPTA Science meetings.
Inclusive Community Events
Making sure our students are welcome in the community means we extend our attentions beyond just school. We’ve helped to host a variety of events open to all, not just our members. Some examples of things we have done in the past are forums for school board candidates, a resource fair, yearly “Chalk the Walk” to decorate schools’ sidewalks with messages of kindness, working with Shelter Insurance to include a sensory-friendly time to view their lovely holiday light display, and holding yearly Walks for Inclusion with activities and educational stations.
Social Member-Family Gatherings
There are perks to being a member though, and one of the best ones are our member-family social gatherings! We’ve had a blast in every season of the year, getting together outside at parks or inside at a rec center. Pool parties, trunk or treating, holiday bashes.. we’ve got it all! 🙂
