Access Arts is designed with the idea that having individuals with disabilities work alongside those of typical abilities is beneficial for all. During the summer they have summer camps for the young art-lovers. They offer a half-day adaptive version “for those children who have disabilities or who just prefer a shorter day”. The half-day camp is the same theme and in collaboration with the full-day camp. Head here to sign up: https://www.schoolofservice.org/summer-camp.html (Final day for registration is July 25, camp runs from July 29-August 2).
Here’s their description of the summer camp’s theme that week:
“Fish in a Tree – July 29-August 2 $220 per child
*Adaptive Camp $95, half-day
In the book Fish in a Tree, by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, we learn, “Everyone is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it’ll spend it’s whole life thinking it’s stupid.” This week we will abandon the rules of physics and biology to create our own fictional environments. Worlds where bumblebees are six feet tall or gravity doesn’t exist or water is neon green, perhaps. Who’s to say it’s not real? Underlying themes will include individuality, creative expression, learning styles, and acceptance of others.”
